Helena Doran has a story about burnout, but she is not giving it all away just yet.

The Moree businesswoman has been through burnout herself, says she has found a way to keep it at bay, and has plenty to say about what she learned along the way. The full story will come next month.

Helena, owner of Bella Santé in Moree, has been asked by the Moree Chamber of Commerce to lead Business Beyond Burnout, an evening bringing local business owners together to talk about the pressures that come with starting, running and growing a business.

It is a subject Helena can approach from experience rather than theory.

“Hopefully in hearing my story and how I’ve beat burnout and how I maintain the beating of the burnout, hopefully [it] will inspire people to want to ask more questions,” she said.

Exactly what happened to Helena, and how she got herself out of it, is something she is largely saving for the night.

Helena’s interest goes well beyond simply telling people to slow down. She talks about asking questions, finding people who can help and being willing to look beyond your own area of knowledge. She has done plenty of that herself.

“There’s so many people that I’ve gone to for help in this town that are so in alignment with my vision too,” she said.

That comment came as Helena was talking about people in Moree working across different areas of health and wellbeing, and her hope that some of them might work more closely together.

“Hopefully one day we can band together,” she said.

It is an idea Helena also sees in what the Chamber is trying to do with Business Beyond Burnout.

“What Chamber’s trying to do with this Beyond Burnout as well is build more of a community standpoint,” she said.

That makes the event broader than Helena’s own experience. The Chamber is assembling a panel of local business owners to talk about the realities of building a business, from starting out to growing, while also dealing with the pressure that comes with it.

Helena will lead the discussion, with the full panel line-up still to be announced.

For someone born in Moree who has lived here all her life and built her own business here, there should be plenty to talk about.

And somewhere in that conversation is the part of Helena’s story she isn’t telling us yet: what burnout looked like for her, what she did about it and how she now keeps it from taking over again.

Business Beyond Burnout is one of two events being held by the Moree Chamber of Commerce as part of its Thrive in Business & Beat Burnout series during Small Business Month.

Rise & Thrive will open the series on Thursday, October 15 with a sunrise Pilates class, breakfast and conversation on the B&W Rural rooftop.

Business Beyond Burnout will be held in the Bank Art Museum Moree garden, 25 Frome Street, on Friday, October 16 from 6pm to 9pm.

Tickets are $50 per person, plus the Eventbrite booking fee, and include a drink on arrival and light bites, with a cash bar available.

Both events are supported through the Moree Plains Shire Council Event Partnership Grant.
