Moree picnic races draws big nominations for round one of bush racing’s Golden Triangle

MOREE Picnic Race Club yesterday received 64 nominations for round one of bush racing’s Golden Triangle on Saturday.

The time-honoured 1400m Boolooroo Cup, first run in 1924, has drawn 17 nominations, including 2022 Picnic Championships Final winner Hemsted and last-start Quambone Cup winner I’m Scarlett, both from the powerful Connie Greig stable.

Versatile mare I’m Scarlett also won last year’s Moree bracelet, beating stablemate Line of Law by a long neck.

Greig, who trains at Dubbo, has also nominated Callie Cool, Pyromania and Te Pani for the 950m Moree Bracelet.

Scone trainer Nikki Pollock is also well-represented in the Boolooroo Cup, with Hit Song, Mad Harry and Maralago nominated.

Todd Bailey brings I’m Scarlett back to scale after winning last year’s Moree Bracelet from stablemate Line of Law (at back). I’m Scarlett is nominated for this year’s Boolooroo Cup.

Maralago is also nominated for the 1600m class 2 handicap.

Pollock has also nominated The Defiant One for the Moree Bracelet as well as Fuel the Jet and One Command in the 1200m class 3 handicap; Shades of Truth in the 950m class B handicap; and Quick to Judge in the 950m maiden plate.

Moree trainer Doug Fernando will start six-year-old On Hold in the Moree Bracelet and four-year-old mare Horeb, a winner at Warialda last month, in the 950m class B handicap.

Collarenebri trainer Kelly Smith will saddle 10-year-old gelding Ringside in the Boolooroo Cup.

Track specialist Ringside, with three wins from eight starts at Moree over 1400m, finished last in the 2025 Boolooroo Cup before placing third in last year’s Mallawa and Talmoi Cups.

The gelding previously won the 2023 Talmoi Cup and 2024 Deepwater Cup.

Collarenebri trainer Kelly Smith, jockey Zara Lewis and 2023 Talmoi Cup winner Ringside. Smith will saddle up Ringside, now a 10-year-old, in the Boolooroo Cup at Moree on Saturday.

Another track specialist, Ridge Wilson’s recent Warialda Cup winner Lesgo Don, is also among Boolooroo Cup nominations, along with Wayne Oakenfull’s Shut Eye, second-last in the cup last year.

Oakenfull will also saddle up Connewarre in the Moree Bracelet and stable newcomer Pub Feed in the 950m maiden.

Scone jockey Ashley Boyd is booked to ride all Oakenfull-trained runners.

Weights for the six-race card will be announced later today.

The Moree picnics also features fashions-on-the-field, an evening dinner with entertainment by Split Image.

The meeting is sponsored by a large number of local and corporate businesses, including Nutrien Ag Solutions, B&W Rural, RDO Equipment, Kenway and Clark, Graincorp and North West Marquees and Events.

Gates open at midday, with patrons encouraged to bring along a picnic lunch.
