2026 Golden Triangle

Business as usual at Mallawa for leading jockey Leandro Ribeiro

Jun 8, 2026

IT was business as usual for leading picnic jockey Leandro Ribeiro at Mallawa on Saturday, when the Brazilian expat brought home a winning double at round two of bush racing’s Golden Triangle.

Ribeiro, who rides primarily for Connie Greig, has ridden 37 winners on the New South Wales picnic circuit this season, and teamed up with the Dubbo trainer to win the 1000m RDO Mallawa Bracelet with Redline Fever and 1000m Irritek Class 2 Handicap with Trigoso.

Former Victorian Redline Fever ($2.50) transferred to Greig earlier this year, and notched her first win for the stable when beating Wayne Oakenfull’s $1.70 favourite Connewarre by one-and-a-half lengths.

Nikki Pollock’s The Defiant One ($10) made up good ground to finish a similar margin away third.

Ribeiro clearly leads the New South Wales picnic jockeys’ premiership and has ridden 11 winners since late March. He said Redline Fever was a strong winner.

“That was pretty impressive,” Ribeiro said.

“She was right on the speed behind the leaders and came home along the inside fence to finish off the race fairly easily.”

Trigoso ($2fav), having its first start for Greig after transferring from Tim Donnelly, scored by a similar margin in the class 2 handicap from Showtime Sassy ($6) and Risk Assessment ($3.40).

Ribeiro said Trigoso raced on the speed to also win impressively.

“She put herself right up there in the early stages of the race and has a great turn of foot,” Ribeiro said.

“She definitely has more wins under her belt, that’s for sure.

“Both horses won pretty easily,” he said.

Leandro Ribeiro signals a winning double as he brings Mallawa Bracelet winner Redline Fever back to scale on Saturday.

Bracelet runner-up Connewarre, winner of the Moree Picnic Bracelet at round one of the Golden Triangle last month, tried hard under 75.5kg for Ashley Boyd.

“It was a good run,” Boyd said.

“He’s a nice, honest horse but the weight just anchored him, especially second-up. He’s not a 1000m horse and wasn’t as fresh as Moree.

“He ran a really honest race, but the winner had 10kg on me,” said.

Boyd received ample consolation with two winners at the meeting – Nikki Pollock’s Apparently in the 1200m AFF-Telleraga Class 3 Handicap and Pub Feed in the 1200m Nutrien Ag Solutions Maiden Plate.

“Apparently was a good maiden winner at Cobar at its previous start, and ran a similar time to a good picnicker, Rubicon River. I thought Apparently would be hard to beat on that,” Boyd said.

“She did it easily in front and won well.”

One-batter Pub Feed ($1.50fav), part-owned by the Our Next New Horse Syndicate in Moree, led throughout to win the three-horse maiden plate by nearly six lengths from C’Mon Donkey ($6) and Tidal Breeze ($2.20).

“He won well, pretty easily actually,” Boyd said.

“He’s got a high-cruising speed and I used that to cross them and set up a good tempo. He went to the line pretty much untouched, and I just gave him a couple of slaps on the shoulder to keep him honest.

“If we can keep him in the right grades, he’ll tick off a couple of more wins quite easily.

“He’s a one-paced horse, but has that high-cruising speed to go with it,” Boyd said.

In a rare occurrence, three jockeys rode doubles on the six-race card.

Also landing two winners was Tamworth hoop Zara Lewis, who won the 1400m B&W Rural-Titan Ag Mallawa Cup on Geoff O’Brien’s Akauwheo and the two-horse 1400m Aircair Aviation Class B Handicap on Stolen Show.

Lewis stole the show when Stolen Show led all the way to beat only rival Taxonomy, ridden by Ribeiro, by three parts of a length.
