THE shout-out is on across the north-west plains as teams, individuals and community groups lace up the running shoes, daub the sunscreen and reset the fitbits – the inaugural Run the Plains is ready to spring from the starting line.
Run the Plains, a two-day event featuring running races over all distances, gets underway Friday afternoon in Balo Street and continues the next day at Moree Water Park.
The NewPave Asphalt Kamilaroi K headlines Friday’s launch with a one-kilometre run along Balo Street to set the pace for the Run the Plains weekend.
Races will commence from 6pm and include wheelchair-accessible as well as 6-9 years, 10-12 years, 13-16 years, open Ladies 17-59 years, open men’s 17-59 years and 60-plus years.
Categories are based on age turned in 2024.
Balo Street will be closed from 5pm to 9pm from Gwydir Street to Albert Street intersections.
Run the Plains is a partnership between Moree Little Athletics Club, Tourism Moree, Moree Ski Park, 2400 Run Club and Moree Parkrun, and has been boosted by Moree Plains Shire Council’s Event Partnership Program, designed to support and expand local events.
Moree Little Athletics Club president Kelly James encourages teams to nominate for the Kamilaroi K.
“Teams will be divided into four categories – school, village, corporate and community – and require a minimum of three members with no upper limit,” Mrs James said.
“The team from each category with the fastest three times on the night in the Kamilaroi K will be crowned the category champion.”
Saturday’s courses at Moree Water Park will loop around the ski lakes, 10km south of Moree. There are five distances, ranging from 3km to 36km.
“There is a race to challenge every ability,” Mrs James said.
On-track facilities will include water, electrolytes, energy gels and toilets. There are time restrictions for entrants in the NewPave Asphalt. However, there are no time restrictions for entrants in any other event. Food and drink vendors will be on site to fuel participants and spectators.
