Apr 5, 2026

A seven-month-old baby girl was a passenger in a vehicle which reached speeds of up to 180kph during a police pursuit in far-western New South Wales overnight.

A 32-year-old man has been charged following the 160km pursuit.

Officers attached to Barrier Police District were conducting roadside breath testing on Menindee Road, Broken Hill, at about 10pm Easter Saturday when they directed a sedan to stop.

Police will allege the driver ignored the direction and a pursuit was initiated onto the Barrier Highway, with the vehicle reaching speeds of up to 180kph in a designated 110kph zone.

The vehicle drove for a further 160km before road spikes were deployed by Wilcannia Police.

The sedan slowed over a five-kilometre range and stopped before the driver allegedly ran into bushland.

A search was conducted, and a 32-year-old man was arrested a short time later.

When the vehicle was checked police found a 34-year-old woman, a 14-year-old girl, and a seven-month-old baby girl inside.

They were unhurt.

The man was taken to Broken Hill Police Station where he was charged with three offences, including drive motor vehicle during disqualification period; police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously; and contravene prohibition/restriction in AVO (Domestic).

He was refused bail to appear in Bail Division Court 4 today.

In an unrelated incident, man banned from driving until 2027 has been charged following a pursuit through Tamworth.

Officers attached to Tamworth Highway Patrol were patrolling Bridge Street, Tamworth, at about 1.20am yesterday, when they directed a sedan to stop.

Police will allege the driver ignored the direction and a pursuit was initiated, travelling through Taminda at speeds of up to 170kph in designated 100kph zones.

Road spikes were deployed on the Oxley Highway, with the vehicle eventually stopped near Soldier Settlement Road at Bective.

A 33-year-old man was arrested a short time later along with his 19-year-old male passenger.

The older man was taken to Tamworth Police Station where he was charged with four offences, including police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously; exceed speed more than 45kph; drive motor vehicle during disqualification period; and drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous.

The younger man has been charged with an outstanding arrest warrant.

Both have been refused bail to appear in Bail Division Court 4 today.
