School holidays set to come alive across the Moree plains

Apr 9, 2026

EVERYTHING from tennis clinics to popcorn-fuelled movie days and colourful outdoor fun, children across the Moree Plains Shire are in for an action-packed school holiday programme, thanks to Council’s community development team, headed up by Yasmine Purcell.

Based at the Big Sky Library, Yasmine has become a familiar face across the region to deliver engaging activities and important community messages to local families.

“I love working with people and getting into the community,” Ms Purcell said.

The upcoming school holiday program began on April 7, with a range of activities tailored especially for younger children.

Ms Purcell and colleague Toni French have put together a schedule designed to entertain, inspire and bring communities together.

A colour run will be just one of the many activities planned for the April school holidays.

Highlights include a tennis clinic, movie day featuring Zootopia 2, Create Your Own Cap workshop, vibrant colour run, and a crowd-favourite Easter egg hunt at Jacaranda Park – and yes, there’ll be plenty of popcorn along the way.

“The kids love it,” Ms Purcell said.

The impact of the program is clear, with one young participant recently presenting Ms Purcell with a handmade bracelet and a heartfelt thank-you note.

“I didn’t have this sort of thing growing up, so Toni and I go the extra mile so the kids will always remember these times,” she said.

Ms Purcell is constantly on the look-out for fresh ideas, drawing inspiration from other councils, local parents, and community partners.

Support from locals such as tennis coach Margie Buckley has also played a key role in bringing the program to life.

Each session runs for around two hours, with council providing food and drinks, making it easy for families to take part and enjoy the experience together.
