Armidale to host national rural health summit

May 20, 2026

ARMIDALE will host a national gathering of future medical professionals when the Australian Medical Students’ Association Rural Health Summit 2026 takes place from May 22 to 24, with around 200 medical students expected to travel to the region from across Australia.

The three-day summit will examine the challenges and opportunities facing rural and regional healthcare, with a focus on training pathways, workforce development and the future of medical practice beyond major metropolitan centres.

Armidale Regional Council is supporting the event in recognition of the important role initiatives like the Rural Health Summit play in strengthening regional health education and linking medical students with regional areas.

Hosting the event also highlights Armidale’s strong education and health sector links, including the University of New England and local health services.

Armidale Regional Council mayor, Sam Coupland, welcomed the students to the region, and said Council is proud to support students that will shape our future healthcare industry.

“Regional areas are crying out for more doctors, and the future growth and overall health of our community relies on doctors choosing to practice outside city centres,” Cr Coupland said.

“Our region offers wonderful lifestyle benefits, a close-knit community and plenty of opportunity, and we hope to see these students return to our region once they have completed their studies.”

The Conference will open on Friday night with a welcome event where students will learn about successful programs such as the NSW Government-funded The Welcome Experience, that is helping medical practitioners and essential workers to successfully move and settle into rural and regional areas through a concierge service.

Council’s sponsorship reflects its ongoing commitment to initiatives that strengthen regional capacity, support future workforce needs and promote Armidale as an attractive destination for study, work and long-term investment.
