Social Soundcheck will hold a free community open mic night at Social Co House from 6pm on Saturday, August 1, 2026. It is open to musicians and singers of all ages and experience levels, with no auditions or advance bookings.
For emerging singers, local musicians and experienced performers, getting on stage will be simple: turn up, add a name to the list and have a go.
Once their name is on the list, performers can choose to sing one song or play a longer set. Acts will have an approximate limit of 10 to 12 minutes, allowing time for several songs while making sure everyone gets a chance at the microphone.
Original music and covers are both welcome. Singers who do not play an instrument can also ask whether another musician is available to accompany them on the night.
From regular sessions to the stage
The open mic night grew from Social Soundcheck, a group where local musicians meet to share ideas, songs, knowledge and skills.
Organiser AJ Fernando said members had been asking for more opportunities to perform in front of an audience.
“We’ve had requests from several musicians in our Social Soundcheck group to go ahead and do a live music night or an open mic,” he said.
AJ said the group allowed musicians of different skill levels to learn from one another and work towards performing at local events. The open mic night gives them another chance to take their music into a public setting.
He said Moree had musicians who regularly played at public and private events, but organisers also hoped the open format would uncover more local talent.
“That’s exactly what we’re searching for,” he said. “We want to find as much talent as possible to bring into our groups, so everyone can learn from others and collaborate.”
A simple way to have a go
The process has been kept simple for performers. There is no need to prepare a full set, secure a booking or commit to several songs.
Someone can perform a single song, test an original piece or join other musicians for a short set. The time limit is intended to keep the night moving and make sure everyone gets a turn.
AJ said there had already been interest from musicians keen to perform.
Building towards a regular event
The August open mic night will also help organisers judge whether there is enough interest to hold the event more often.
“If it succeeds, we’ll probably do it every couple of months,” AJ said. “If it’s as successful as we’d like it to be, we could do it monthly.”
The open mic night will be held at Social Co House from 6pm on Saturday, August 1, 2026. Entry is free, and performers can sign up when they arrive.
