Transport for NSW will today start work to improve safety on a stretch of the Gwydir Highway about 50 kilometres west of Moree.

Work at Browns Creek involves widening the road and improvements to two kilometres of pavement as well as repairs to five culverts.

A Transport for NSW spokesperson said the Gwydir Highway is a significant east-west link for northern NSW and this work will make the road safer for all users while reducing ongoing maintenance costs.

“It will help make our regional road network safer and deliver a stronger, more resilient section of the highway,” the spokesperson said.

“The pavement at this section is very narrow and in need of regular heavy patching and other maintenance work, so these improvements will help reduce ongoing maintenance costs and the disruption from road works for all road users.”

Work will start today, Monday, March 24, and is expected to take three months to complete, weather permitting.

Work will be carried out between 7am and 5pm on weekdays and on alternate weekends starting Saturday 29 March.

Changed traffic conditions include single lane closures and a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h during work hours. Outside work hours, the speed limit will be 60 kmh.

Motorists should follow the directions of all traffic control and signs, including reduced speed limits.

Further improvement and repair work will take place at this location later this year. The exact dates for this work, and traffic impacts, will be shared with the community as the program is confirmed.
