SES issues Stay Informed advice for Gravesend, Boggabilla, Toomelah

THE NSW SES has issued Stay Informed advice for Gravesend, Boggabilla and Toomelah as residents mop up after more than three days of heavy rain that saw falls of up to 200mm fall across the north-west.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns minor flooding is possible at Gravesend Road Bridge overnight Saturday and into Sunday.

Moderate to heavy rainfall has been recorded across parts of the Gwydir River catchment, which is causing river level rises.

The situation is being closely monitored and this warning will be updated as required.

Minor flooding may occur along the Gwydir River downstream of Copeton Dam.

At 5pm Saturday, the Gwydir River at Gravesend Road Bridge was 1.65m and steady, and may reach the minor flood level – 6.10m – overnight Saturday into Sunday.

Gwydir River readings at 5pm, Saturday, March 29:

Gwydir River at Bundarra: 1.02 and steady;

Halls Creek at Bingara: 0.34m and steady;

Horton River at Rider: 0.89m and steady ;

Gwydir River at Gravesend Road Bridge: 1.65m and steady;

Gwydir River at Pallamallawa: 1.11m and steady;

Gwydir River at Yarraman Bridge: 0.93m and steady; and

Mehi River at Moree: 1.05 and steady.

Rainfall readings across the district for the past seven days are mostly in triple figures.

Boggabilla and Goondiwindi averaged 110mm for the week; Barraba received 200mm; Narrabri 185mm; Collarenebri 170mm; Walgett 200mm; Wee Waa 180mm; and Mallawa 125mm.

Rainfall reading of up to 75mm were reported in Moree.

BoM has issued a Moderate Flood Warning for the Peel River at Tamworth and Minor Flood Warning for the Namoi River at Boggabri, Narrabri, and Wee Waa.

The Namoi River at Boggabri is currently at 3.89m and rising, below the 7m minor flood level.

The Namoi River at Boggabri is likely to reach the minor flood level early Sunday morning. Further rises are possible.

At 10.30pm Saturday, March 29, the Narrabri Creek at Narrabri was 4.26m and rising, below the 4.90m minor flood level and may reach the 4.90m minor flood level early Sunday morning, with further rises possible.

The Namoi River at Wee Waa (Glencoe) was 3.72m and rising, below the 5.30m minor flood level and may reach the 5.30m minor flood level early Sunday morning, with further rises possible.

Flood Safety Advice:

In life threatening emergencies, call 000 (triple zero) immediately.

If requiring rescue, assistance to evacuate or other emergency help, ring NSW SES on 132 500.

Avoid drowning. Stay out of rising water, seek refuge in the highest available place.

Prevent damage to your vehicle. Move it under cover, away from areas likely to flood.

Avoid being swept away. Stay out of fast-flowing creeks and storm drains.

Never drive, ride or walk through flood water. Flood water can be deceptive and dangerous.
