RISING Sun Film Society on Sunday, April 13, presents Wicked Little Letters, a riotous mystery comedy set in 1920s England.
Based on a stranger-than-fiction true story, Wicked Little Letters follows two neighbours: Edith, played by Olivia Colman and Rose, played by Jessie Buckley. When Edith and fellow residents begin to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, Rose is charged with the crime. The anonymous letters prompt a national uproar, and a trial.
However, as the town’s women – led by police officer Gladys Moss – begin to investigate the crime themselves, they suspect that something is amiss, and Rose may not be the culprit after all.
Wicked Little Letters is a 2023 British black comedy mystery film directed by Thea Sharrock and written by Jonny Sweet. The movie, based the real-life saga, Littlehampton Libels, stars Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley, Anjana Vasan, Joanna Scanlan, Gemma Jones, Malachi Kirby, Lolly Adefope, Eileen Atkins and Timothy Spall.
Edith Swan, a devout Christian in seaside village Littlehampton, becomes the target of hate mail, an issue of great distress to her controlling father Edward and gentle mother Victoria.
After being sent 19 letters filled with profanities, Edward seeks the assistance of the local police. They suspect their neighbour, single mother and Irish migrant Rose Gooding, as the sender.
Chicago Sun-Times reviewer Richard Roeper gave the film three stars out of four.
“The chief delight in Wicked Little Letters is watching Colman and Buckley in action; it’s really not much of a mystery, as the culprit is revealed to us long before the townsfolk catch on,” he wrote.
Wicked Little Letters won a British Independent Film Award (BIFA) for Best Ensemble Performance, and was nominated for Girls on Film Awards and The Casting Directors’ Guild Award.
