Carrington Cotton Boggabilla Cup race meeting reunion Saturday

Jul 14, 2025

THE 12th Annual Carrington Cotton Boggabilla Cup meeting returns to Gunsynd Park on Saturday, but this year, it’s more than just a race – it’s a homecoming.

The Goondiwindi Race Club is proud to host a full weekend reunion honouring two much-loved figures of Boggabilla’s past: Senior Sergeant Ian Campbell and his right-hand man, Grahame Gunn.

In the 1970s and 1980s, these men helped shape the heart and soul of the town, not only through their role in law and order, but through their deep involvement in community life, sport, and the spirit of mateship that defined the era.

Now, decades later, they return with their wives to reconnect with old friends, share memories, and celebrate the enduring legacy of a town that still holds them close.

Celebrations kick off Friday, July 18, with a Goondiwindi Cotton Alcheringa cotton tour, a walk down memory lane as Ian and Graham see what’s changed and what’s stayed the same.

The afternoon brings a bit of fun and rivalry with the Goondiwindi Golf Club Chook Run, followed by a relaxed social gathering at the clubhouse where stories will no doubt flow like old times.

Then comes the big day, Saturday at Gunsynd Park.

A five-race card, a buzzing bookies’ ring, top-notch country catering by Jodie Jeans, and the warmth of community spirit all set the scene for what promises to be a truly special day.

The club’s guests of honour will be trackside to meet with sponsors, share memories, and enjoy the races that still carry the heart of country Queensland.

Saturday night wraps up with a casual dinner at O’Shea’s Royal Hotel, Dinner with the Campbell’s & Gunn’s, an open invite to anyone wanting to reconnect over a bistro meal and a yarn or two. Former club president Geoff Makim remembers the era.

“My wife Jennifer and I have such wonderful memories of that era, it was a great time,” Makim said.

“I can’t wait to say hello again. After 51 years, it will be a time to reminisce, remember old mates like Albert Smith and Ganna Hoole, and celebrate all that made Bogga so special.”

Current president Don Madden echoed Makim’s sentiment.

“Country racing was built on community. This weekend is about honouring that. If we lose that social fabric, we lose what makes days like this matter,” Madden said.

Saturday’s meeting features five races, with nominations due today, July 15, by 11am.
