An empty return trip from Tamworth delivered more than a load of timber for Gwydir Industries on July 9, with Hill Fitzsimmons Towing & Recovery transporting the material to Moree free of charge.

Gwydir Industries’ Errol Carter contacted local drivers to ask whether anyone returning from Tamworth with an empty vehicle could collect the timber. Hill Fitzsimmons Towing & Recovery agreed to help, saving the not-for-profit organisation the cost of freight.

“I just put the call out and said, ‘If you’re going over and coming back empty, is there any chance you could pick up some timber for us?’” Mr Carter said.

“For a not-for-profit place like we run, that is a big help. With the price of freight, every cent counts.”

The load will become part of Gwydir Industries’ timber stock and will be used to fulfil orders as they are received.

Workers at the Moree organisation use timber to produce a range of items, including survey pegs, painted farm pegs, tree stakes, tomato stakes and other timber products.

Mr Carter said surveyors, farmers, local businesses and members of the public were among the customers who purchased the products. Timber pegs had also been supplied for roadworks and local development projects.

Members of the public can visit the Gwydir Industries front office to buy timber products, with quantities adjusted according to customer needs. Products can be prepared for uses including gardens, tree supports, farms and surveying work.

The timber workshop is one part of Gwydir Industries’ broader operations.

The organisation also collects cardboard from businesses around Moree before processing it into bales for recycling. Clear plastic, bottles and cans are also collected and processed.

Mr Carter said cardboard could be dropped at the organisation, helping keep material out of landfill while supporting the work carried out at Gwydir Industries.

The organisation also offers trophies, plaques, engraving and personalised products. Customers can select trophies from catalogues, while plaques, cake toppers, drinkware and other items can be engraved or personalised.

These recycling, manufacturing and service activities provide practical work for the people supported by Gwydir Industries while supplying products and services to schools, sporting clubs, businesses, farmers and residents.

Gwydir Industries publicly thanked Hill Fitzsimmons Towing & Recovery for donating the timber delivery.

“We are truly grateful for your kindness and generosity,” the organisation said.
