The NSW Minister for Local Government is considering suspending Moree Plains Shire Council’s elected governing body and appointing an interim administrator for three months.
The proposal was confirmed on Monday morning, 26 October, following enquiries about reports that the council had been issued a show-cause notice.
A spokesperson for the Office of Local Government said no final decision had been made.
“The Council and its councillors have until COB on Friday 6 November 2026 to respond and any submissions received will be considered by the Minister,” the spokesperson said.
If the proposal proceeds, the elected councillors would be suspended from their governing roles for three months, with an interim administrator taking over the council’s governing responsibilities during that period.
The Minister will consider any submissions received before deciding whether to proceed.
The Office of Local Government has not provided Moree Online News with a copy of the notice or confirmed the specific statutory provisions being considered.
Moree Online News has also approached Moree Plains Shire Council and Mayor Susannah Pearse for comment.
